Lot 107: 1998 Simms 131ci Custom Softail
Motorcycles featuring Michael Corbin Collection, Bonhams & Butterfields (3rd May 2008)
There are simply no bigger names in the world of custom cycles than that of Ron Simms. Located in Hayward in the California Bay Area, Simms Custom Cycles has been setting the industry standard for over 30 years. Ron Simms’ creations have featured countless times on the covers of motorcycle magazines, while his customers include movie stars, athletes, celebrities and captains of industry. High horsepower bikes are a Simms speciality; his own-design Thug v-twin motor displaces 131ci (2,148cc) and pumps out close to 150bhp, ensuring that Simms customs possess ‘go’ as well as ‘show’. This design philosophy is succinctly summed up in the company’s own words: ‘Every bike is designed first and foremost to be ridden. We ensure their durability and performance by using only the finest materials, components and time tested fabrication methods. By refusing to take shortcuts we ensure the integrity of our machines as well as our reputation as the leader in the industry.’ With that kind of pride and commitment, it’s obvious why Mike Corbin chose Simms to create the unique custom cycle offered here.
Completed in 1998 and purchased directly from Ron Simms by Mike Corbin, this unique machine incorporates a Kosman Custom Softail frame and features stunning aquarium-themed graphics, flawlessly executed by Simms’ paintwork maestro, Horst. Other noteworthy special features include belt-drive transmission, 6-pot brake calipers and a one-off Corbin seat.
