Lot 40: Ferrari DINO 246GT
Classic & Historic Automobile, BCA (2nd October 2007)
First showing in 1969 at Turin, the Dino 246 was the replacement for the 206 that had been initially conceived as an entry level Ferrari and to stave of competition from the likes of the Porsche 911. The increased capacity met the demand for more power from customers, with the new engine producing 195bhp at 7,600 rpm, fuelled by three 40 DCN F/7 Weber carburettors. Though not officially badged or marketed as a Ferrari, the model was instead designated with the name 'Dino' in honour of the founder's late son, Alfredino 'Dino' Ferrari, who influenced Enzo Ferrari's decision to produce a line of racing cars in the 1950s, with V6 and V8 engine designs. Until 1976 the Ferrari badge was reserved for road cars with 12 cylinders. The 246GT Coup and GTs were marketed alongside their Ferarri-badged stablemates. One of the most truly stunning designs of the period, visually pleasing from all angles, the 246 models have seen a steady rise in popularity and are now keenly sought by Ferrari collectors. This example of the iconic Dino is finished in Ferrari Giallo Fly Yellow with black trim. Having just emerged from a long period of storage following an older restoration, the car appears to be bodily sound with good panel fit and finish, though it is currently not roadworthy and will require careful mechanical recommissioning and some cosmetic attention including replacement of the trim and replating of the bumpers, etc.Although the car appears by the chassis number supplied to have been manufactured in November 1971 and registered in Middlesex during July 1973, reports supplied indicate that this appears be a left-hand-drive car that has at some point been converted to right-hand-drive. On this basis we advise that the DVLA may require that the vehicle be inspected and a new VIN number and Registration issued before it can be used on the road. This vehicle is sold strictly on an 'as seen' basis.
