Lot 128: Triumph TR6
British Heritage + Classic & Sports Cars, Barons (8th September 2009)
The Triumph TR6 was the best-selling Triumph in history when production ended in 1976. In later years it was surpassed by the TR7 but more than 94,000 TR6s were built, ninety percent of them for the American market.
The model was quite refined, for a sports car. It featured pile carpet on the floor and in the boot , plush-looking bucket seats, a lovely wooden dashboard and a full complement of instrumentation. In the USA, it featured the six-cylinder engine that was carried over from the TR250, while the UK version had a more powerful fuel-injected engine from the TR5 that included the Lucas mechanical fuel injection system.
The TR6 can trace its lineage back to the four-cylinder TR4, TR4A, TR3/TR3A and TR2 but the styling is more aggressive than the TR4 and TR5, because Michelotti was too busy to design the 6, so it went to the German styling house, Karmann instead.
Offered here is a beautiful example of the TR6, which is described as being in excellent condition and an extremely sound car. It has the straight six, 2.5 litre, fuel injected engine mated to the 4-speed manual gearbox, which is also equipped with overdrive. It is said to perform extremely well.
Finished in Mimosa yellow with black interior and hood, the car is complete with an MoT through to June 2010 and even has tax through to April 2010.
This stylish, six-cylinder, British sports car is regarded by some as the last true Triumph. And who would argue.
