Lot 001: Morris minor Saloon
Classic Cars & Bikes, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (12th March 2008)
Everyone remembers Sir Alec Issigonis for the Mini but in fact, the car that he himself was most proud of was the 1948 Morris Minor. With its revolutionary monocoque body, independent torsion bar suspension and roomy interior, it managed to combine the dynamics, luxuries and conveniences of a good motor car with a price accessible to the working classes. By comparison the Mini, introduced in 1959, was a spartan go-kart with everything cut to the bone. Over 1.6 million were sold up to 1971 and even today, no vicar's tea party or WI meeting is complete without a Moggie in the car park.First registered in February 1964, this Moggie was in daily use until July 2007 when the cylinder head gasket failed and has not been repaired since. Said to be very sound underneath, it retains its original blue leather interior although this is now in a rather sorry state. This lot will be sold with no reserve and all proceeds will go to the Charles Renton Cancer Treatment Unit at Hereford Hospital.
