Lot 069: MG B Roadster
MGB's are still such a relatively common sight on Britain's roads that it is sometimes easy to forget just what delightful little cars they are. Beautifully styled, easy to maintain and more than capable of keeping up with modern traffic, they are in many ways the perfect classic car particularly in early roadster guise as you see here.Launched in 1962 to replace the MGA which had done wonders for the reputation of the marque and sold in previously unheard-of numbers, the MGB was also an immediate success. Powered by an enlarged 1,789cc version of the BMC 'B' series engine with pushrod operated overhead-valves, it developed a useful 94bhp and produced bags of torque at very low revs. The body, which was built up in box sections on a two-part floorplan, provided comfortable accommodation for two, with a snug hood and wind-up windows at last.Built in August 1964, this particular car was despatched to W Watson & Co of Liverpool and first registered on 7th September 1964. Acquired by the current vendor about 20 years ago, it was treated to a total nut-and-bolt rebuild which took eight years and cost over 12,000. The car has been very little used since the restoration was completed in 1997 and is still in outstanding condition today. These early pull-handle MGB Roadsters are now highly sought after and you would be hard pressed to find a better example than this. Freshly MOTd before the sale it needs absolutely nothing except a good run in the sunshine with a new owner at the wheel.
