Lot 319: 1977 Volkswagen Beetle -Full VW Service History
True Greats, Coys (5th December 2007)
Everyone knows the story of the Beetle; it was initially designed to provide cheap transport for the hard working German masses. Built in very small numbers before and during World War II, the Beetle literally rose from the ashes of Volkswagen's bombed-out Wolfsburg factory to become an instant success in Europe, Britain, America and virtually every other country in the world. The model evolved through various facelifts and numerous mechanical changes - there were more than 70,000 identifiable modifications - and provided a platform for other models, including commercial vehicles and sporting derivatives such as those by Karmann-Ghia. It was this constant development and attention to detail which allowed the Beetle to maintain its position, and it is these traits which make good examples such a sensible purchase today; a late model, such as the car we offer, underwent a great deal of development. As production raced past the 15,000,000 mark, the Beetle went on to be crowned as the best selling car of all time. Production of German-built Beetles finished in the late 1970s, with this particular car rolling off the production line in December 1977, the last month of home production. Described by the vendor as being in excellent condition all round, with its Alpine White paintwork and blue velour interior all in very good order, the car was owned by one lady owner from 1978 until June 2006 and has only covered 52,000 genuine miles. Meticulously maintained throughout its life, and complete with all MoT test certificates dating back to 1990 and a full Volkswagen service history, the car is supplied with a V5 registration document, a MoT test certificate valid until November 2008 and owner's service manual.
