Lot 437: 1969 Aston Martin DBS Saloon

Although always intended to house the new Tadek Marek-designed V8 engine, the Aston Martin DBS first appeared with the 4.0-litre ‘six’ of the concurrently produced DB6. Styled in-house by Bill Towns, the beautiful DBS caused quite a stir, Autocar magazine observing that: ‘Without the aid of an Italian stylist the Newport Pagnell team came up with something as modern, handsome and Italianate as anything from the Turin coachbuilders at that time.’ The vendor purchased this DBS immediately following the completion of a major refurbishment commissioned by its then owner, whose hand-written list of work carried out and specialists responsible accompanies the car. Far too lengthy to reproduce fully here, this included a full engine rebuild; automatic gearbox removed and checked; differential bearings replaced; power steering and braking system overhauled; rear road springs replaced; extensive bodywork repairs; partial repaint; all wheels and tyres replaced; carpets renewed; and interior leather re-Connollised in Aston Martin Scarlet. The rebuild was undertaken during 1987 and when purchased by the vendor that same year the car displayed a total of 85,000 miles on the odometer while relatively few miles have been covered since.
