Lot 002: MG Midget

Launched in 1961 with a rather weedy 948cc A-Series engine, the MG Midget was constantly revised over the next two decades, going through MkI, II and III stages before finally becoming the MG Midget 1500 in 1974. The main distinguishing features of the last model were Rostyle wheels, a more modern interior, a higher ride height and new rubber bumpers to improve crash performance for the all-important US market. To compensate for the car's added weight and to improve performance, a new 1500cc engine was now standard which gave the car a top speed just a whisker short of the magic ton.First registered in 1980, this is one of the very last MG Midgets ever to leave the factory. The final run of 500 were all painted black and fitted with a commemorative plaque on the dash board. This car is chassis number GAN6 229300G putting it right in the middle of this final batch  the very last Midget is on display at the Motor Heritage Centre in Gaydon. Said to be in good useable condition, it would benefit from a new canvas hood and other minor improvements  the vendor states that it is a bit noisy in first gear. Due to have a fresh MOT before the sale, it is still a fun little car with a rarity value that justifies the work now required to restore it to its former glory.
