Lot 064: 1960 JAGUAR MK II 3.4 LITRE
Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (20th June 2007)
Introduced in 1959, the MK2 has long been Jaguar's best-loved saloon. Its combination of svelte good looks, strong performance and gentlemen's club interior has successfully charmed every passing generation. Based around a more sophisticated version of its MK1 predecessor's monocoque bodyshell equipped with independent coil-and-wishbone front suspension, a Panhard-rod located 'live' rear axle and four-wheel disc brakes, the newcomer was powered by a choice of race-bred 2.4 litre, 3.4 litre and 3.8 litre XK DOHC straight-six engines. Although, slower on paper than their range-topping 3.8 litre siblings, the 3.4 litre cars nonetheless boasted some 210bhp and 216lbft of torque, outputs sufficient to ensure a circa 120mph top speed and spirited acceleration (especially when fitted with the desirable four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox). Finished in blue with blue leather upholstery, this particular example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, four-speed manual plus overdrive gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, chassis bodywork and paintwork. A comparatively early car (MK2 3.4 litre production began at chassis number 150001), '5775 DA' was reportedly "laid up 1984-1990" before undergoing an extensive restoration in 1991. Treated to "a new headlining and carpets" as well as a major overhaul of its "body, chassis, engine and chromework", the saloon is said to have covered some 99,970 miles from new but just 5,000 of those since work was completed. Riding on chrome wire wheels shod with new tyres, this nicely presented Jaguar is offered for sale with "original tool box", MOT certificate valid until March 2008 and historic class (free) road tax valid until April 2008.
