Lot 400: 1904 Quadrant 443cc 3hp
Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (16th October 2005)
The Quadrant Tricycle Co. Of Sheepcote Street, Birmingham, were makers of beautiful bicycles and tricycles from the 1880’s onwards, all fitted with their patented quadrant steering - a set of rails along which the front axle ran. Naturally, they were ready to join the nascent motor cycle industry at the turn of the century and became noted for the quality and reliability of their products in an era where neither quality nor reliability were easily found. ‘Among the best makers’ said ‘Ixion’ at the time. At first Minerva-engined, the company soon developed its own units. In the hands of rider Tom Silver, Quadrants achieved many trial and reliability run successes. Surviving as makers into the 1920’s, the Quadrant is well–documented in any of the standard histories of motor-cycling.
This example, exceptionally, is in mostly original and non-restored condition, with the exception of a re-made petrol tank. With most of its original finish intact it is most definitely an original survivor of the pioneer era. In good running order it was entered for the 2002 Pioneer Run. EP 3582 comes with Pioneer Certificate No 1596, a V5 and photocopied Quadrant literature and instructions for its DR carburetor. An opportunity to purchase an exceptional machine from the dawn of motor-cycling.
