Lot 684: 1964 Jaguar Mk2 3.8-Litre Saloon

Important Collectors' Motor Cars, and Motorcycles, Bonhams (4 December 2006)

A progressive development of the MkI, Jaguar’s first unitary-construction saloon, the Mk2 made its debut in October 1959. Slimmer windscreen pillars and deeper side windows greatly enlarged the Mk2’s glass area, and the deletion of its predecessor's full-sized rear wheel spats allowed the rear track to be widened, a move which increased roll resistance and stability. Otherwise, running gear remained much the same as before, with independent front suspension by wishbones and coil springs, a leaf-sprung live rear axle and Dunlop servo-assisted disc brakes (optional at first on the MkI but standard from November 1957) on all four wheels. A redesigned dashboard with speedometer and rev-counter ahead of the driver and the minor gauges grouped in the centre established Jaguar’s layout for years to come. With the launch of the Mk2, the 3.8-litre version of the XK twin-camshaft six-cylinder engine became available for the first time in the company's medium-sized saloon. Mk2 transmission options were either a four-speed manual or Borg-Warner automatic gearbox, an improved all-synchromesh version of the former being specified from 1965. Chassis number ‘232497DN’ is an original right-hand drive car equipped with the desirable manual/overdrive transmission. Originally a 3.4-litre model, it was restored in the late 1990s and has been upgraded with the more powerful 3.8-litre engine, while other sensible improvements include XJ6 brake discs and calipers, power-assisted steering, halogen headlights, stereo system and central locking, all of which makes this car eminently capable of coping with modern driving conditions. Offered from a private collection, ‘9395 KW’ is finished in dark blue with red leather interior and comes with old-style logbook, current MoT/road fund licence and Swansea V5 registration document.
