Lot 032: 1968 Plymouth GTX Convertible
Collectors Motor Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (8th June 2008)
The '68 GTX was billed as an upscale midsize muscle car. Based, like the Road Runner, on the Belvedere two-door body, it was the only Plymouth equipped with the 440cu in four-barrel motor, producing 375bhp and a stonking 480lb ft of torque - good for 0-60mph in 6.4 secs and easier to keep in tune than the Hemi motor. TorqueFlite automatic transmission was standard, with the four-speed manual a no-cost alternative. The GTX dressed the part with standard chrome wheelarch mouldings (though this car appears never to have been so fitted), tail-panel brightwork and double side stripes. It came with the well-appointed Sport Satellite cabin featuring such details as a standard rev counter and floor shift. "As a performance car, the GTX has few equals", concluded Car Life. "With the 440 engine, it offers as much performance-per-dollar as anything on the market, and more than most". One of only 881 convertibles thought to have been produced in 1968, this car has been extensively restored at a cost of 20,000 including bare-metal respray (the owner has chosen to leave off the stripes), the 440 cu in Super Commando engine having been overhauled by Jeff Hauser of Hauser Racing. It has power brakes, (a front disc conversion, optional when new, with new master cylinder and servo), power steering, new Torq Thrust D American Racing alloys shod with BF Goodrich tyres and, says its vendor, a huge history file. The power roof matches the white vinyl interior, perfectly set off by the QQ1 Bright Metallic Blue paint. Described as being in "excellent overall" condition, with 'numbers matching', this GTX convertible is a very rare and desirable gentleman's muscle car.
