Lot 228: 1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Motor cars, Bonhams (31st August 2007)

1966 Ford Mustang GT Convertible
Ford created a new class of car almost overnight with the introduction of the Mustang sports coupé part way through the 1964 season. Aimed at the affluent young, for whom a car was as much a lifestyle statement as means of transport, the Mustang succeeded brilliantly, achieving sales in excess of a quarter million by the end of ’64.
Customers could choose from an extensive range of factory options, with the result that no two Mustangs are identical, and this particular car brings together some of the most desirable features sought after by discerning Mustang collectors. These include the high performance 225bhp ‘A’-code, V8 engine; four-speed manual transmission; and the ‘GT’ equipment group comprising disc brakes, up-rated suspension, dual exhausts, fog lamps, racing stripes and special ornamentation.
This soft-top example of Ford’s landmark ‘Pony Car’ was first registered in the UK in January 1969 and for most of the period 1980 to 2003 was owned by a single individual. In 1994 the latter took part in the 30th Anniversary Mustang Tour of the USA together with 15 other Mustangs from Switzerland. Over 10,000 miles were covered between 18th March and 3rd May on an itinerary that included visits to Ford factories on a route starting and finishing in Jacksonville, taking in New Orleans, Houston, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Kansas City, Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati on the way. The Tour is fully documented (in English and German) and this car was featured in the owners club magazine, ‘Mustang International 1994 Roundup’.
The vendor advises us that the car is completely original apart from the paintwork and the addition of a non-period radio/cassette, electric windows and rear seat belts. Off the road between 1997 and 2002, it comes with expired MoTs covering the period 1994 to 2006 together with bills for recent maintenance. The latter include invoices for new wheels, tyres, brake cylinders, shock absorbers (x4), heater core, clutch, radiator and fuel tank, as well as routine servicing. A rare opportunity to acquire a highly collectible, first-of-the-line example of this landmark model in its most desirable power operated soft-top configuration, ‘WLW 95G’ is offered with original handbook, build sheet decoder printout, current MoT, road fund licence to August 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
