MG's Midget range, which had begun with the M-type of 1928, had proven a runaway success that found favour with enthusiasts on and off the track on both sides of the Atlantic. The first post-war Midget had been the TC and the wider-bodied TD that replaced it was again similar, albeit with a new box section chassis. Braking was also improved with twin rather than single leading shoe drums while smaller disc type wheels replaced the previous wires, the lower overall gearing accommodated by the wider ratios of the four speed Y-Type gearbox. The MG TF first appeared at the 1953 Motor Show and was the ideal successor to the TD. A more refined car than the TD, it featured a sloping bonnet line and radiator, headlights grafted into the wings, sharply raked tail and individual bucket seats to replace the previous bench type fitted to the TD. These considerable cosmetic improvements were coupled with an uprated 1,250cc power unit. A year later a 1,500cc version of the TF was announced, increasing power from 57bhp to 63bhp at 5,500rpm. This particular example has been with the current owner for over eight years during which time he has put into place a programme of improvements. These improvements do not form part of a restoration project however, as the previous owner has also been vigilant in the upkeep of the car during the thirty years he has owned it. This is amply testified in the accompanying file of paperwork. The paintwork has been attended in recent years as well as the fitting of a new hood and side screens. This eminently practical and reliable example of one of Britains most fondly regarded sports cars comes complete with an unleaded fuel conversion as well as a full MoT.
