Lot 117: Mercedes-Benz 220A Ponton Saloon

The 220 Ponton saloon was a six cylinder version of the earlier 180 with better quality interior and more power. These models were the first Mercedes cars to be built using unitary construction, with the same body employed for a whole range, from the 180/180D, 220A, 220S, 219 and the 220S/220SE Cabriolet.Offered here is a 1955 220A, which is well known in Mercedes club circles. The car was on loan to Mercedes as a show car when they launched the new E-Class and won first prize, in the saloon car class, at the 1998 Cornhill Insurance Trophy. The car was previously owned by a Plymouth based Mercedes dealer and used as a promotional vehicle.Finished in black with beige cloth interior, the car is described as being in good condition throughout. With its straight six engine and 4 speed manual transmission, the model could hit over 97mph and offered generous accommodation.Offered complete with MoT certificates dating back to 1977, original service booklet, parts book and owners manual.
