Lot 852: 1967 Pontiac GTO
The George Barris Collection, Bonhams & Butterfields (14th May 2005)
xXx
Columbia, 2002
Midnight blue with black vinyl interior, original Pontiac power train.
A number of cars were built by Eddie Paul using the famous 1967 Pontiac GTO platform. This particular car was used in the film as the 2nd unit stunt car, and utilized for the burn outs and spin outs.
This hit action film confirmed Vin Diesel’s star power after his co-starring role in The Fast and the Furious. xXx features Diesel as Xander Cage, an extreme sport thrill-seeker and underground website star, with a serious problem with authority. Diesel stars again as the unlikely antihero who, recruited by a shadowy government agency led by Samuel L. Jackson, is thrust undercover into the post-Soviet Czech Republic. Diesel’s assignment is to infiltrate a terrorist group called Anarchy ’99, whose leader’s lofty goal is to destroy all the societies and governments on the planet with a deadly experimental nerve agent. The poison gas called 'Silent Night' will be delivered by an automated circumnavigating hydrofoil/submarine. Xander’s overture to the terrorists is that he wants to buy a flock of stolen cars for shipment to the U.S.
All of the cars are the Italian and German usual suspects, with one exception, the car that Xander says is for him personally, a 1967 Pontiac GTO. The climax of the movie is a harrowing chase along the banks of Prague’s Vitava River as Cage in this GTO keeps pace with the speeding hydrofoil as it races to deliver the first installment of poison gas to the historic capital.
