Lot 051: 1958 Bentley S1 Saloon
Collectors Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (23rd July 2008)
Typifying the growing economic confidence of the mid 1950s, the Bentley S1 was larger, faster and more boldly styled than its MKVI predecessor. Introduced in 1955, there was nothing average about its 'Standard Steel Saloon' bodywork. A masterclass in formal elegance, it was underpinned by a new cruciform-braced box-section chassis equipped with independent coil-sprung front suspension, a 'live' rear axle and servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes. Powered by a twin SU carburettor fed 4887cc straight-six engine allied to standard-fit four-speed automatic transmission, the S1 could waft along at over 100mph. Once affectionately described as "a veritable country club on wheels", the model certainly boasted an inviting cabin. Trimmed with the finest hides, carpets and wood veneers, it promised relaxation and contentment. Finished in metallic green with red leather upholstery, this particular example is variously described by the vendor as being in "good" (automatic transmission, bodywork, paintwork, wheels / tyres), "very good" (engine, electrical equipment, chassis) or "excellent" (interior trim) condition. Reportedly "delivered new to Yardley & Co for the use of J. Lytton Garner on 19th November 1958", chassis number 'B 381 FD' is further understood to have been "exported to California early in life from where it was repatriated by the current owner, a RREC member, in 2004". Apparently "professionally treated with Dinitrol immediately after import so as to preserve its Californian, rust-free condition", the Bentley was also reunited with its original UK registration number, 'FHC 434'. Benefiting from power steering, the S1 is said to have proved "reliable and a pleasure to drive" over the last four years. Stylish and elegant, this well travelled Bentley is offered for sale with MOT certificate valid until April 2009.
