Lot 228: 1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupé

Porsche and Lotus Motor Cars, Bonhams (26th July 2008)

1990 Porsche 911 Carrera 4 Coupé
Representing a major step forward in the development of Porsche’s perennial 911, the Carrera 4 and Carrera 2 were launched in 1989, the former marking the first time that four-wheel drive had been seen on a series-production model. Porsche had experimented with four-wheel drive on the 959 supercar, and many of the lessons learned from the latter influenced the design of the new Carreras’ chassis and suspension. Face-lifted but retaining that familiar shape, the newcomers had been given a more extensive work-over mechanically, 87% of parts being claimed as entirely new. Typed ‘964’, the pair shared the same 3.6-litre, flat-six engine while power-assisted steering (another 911 ‘first’), anti-lock brakes and a five-speed manual transmission were standard on both, with the Tiptronic auto ’box a Carrera 2-only option. Its new engine enabled the 964 to out-perform the old ‘3.2’ yet still met the latest emissions regulations, top speed increasing to 162mph with 60mph attainable in 5.4 seconds (5.6 seconds Tiptronic).
This Carrera 4 was originally sold by Isaac Agnew (Mallusk) Ltd and first registered on 10th February 1990 to Mr Samuel Dunaghy, of Hollywood, County Down. It was originally registered ‘TIW 4374’ in Northern Ireland, where it appears to have had two subsequent owners, before being exported to Glasgow and reregistered ‘B8 DBF’ on 24th March 1998.
The vendor purchased the car from eporsch (a marque specialist based in Chertsey) on 1st April 2006, at which time it displayed a total of a little over 100,000 miles on the odometer. Since then the vendor has used the Porsche regularly, clocking up a further 10,000 miles. ‘B8 DEF’ has been well maintained and underwent an engine bottom-end rebuild shortly after coming into its present ownership. The vehicle comes with a history file containing assorted bills/receipts showing regular servicing either with Porsche main agents or more recently with independent specialists. We are advised that recent expenditure has focused on fixing minor electrical issues such as replacing the driver's side window motor and removing the previously installed alarm system because of its temperamental nature. The car will have been serviced prior to sale.
Finished in Alpine White with midnight blue leather interior, ‘B8 DEF’ comes with the desirable 17” Porsche Cup alloy wheels and electric sunroof. The car is offered with current MoT certificate, road fund licence to the end of October 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
