Lot 31: 1968 JAGUAR E-TYPE SERIES 1.5 4.2 LITER ROADSTER
Exceptional Motor Cars, Christies (3rd June 2006)
Body No. 4E10315
British Racing Green with black leather interior and black hood
Engine: six cylinders, in-line, 4,235cc, 265bhp at 5,400rpm; Gearbox: four speed manual; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: servo-assisted discs all round. Left hand drive.
As the 1960s progressed and the world became more self-aware and Naderesque, stricter safety and emissions regulations countered the motor industry's toil for increased power and cleaner forms. The tide showed no signs of abating and Jaguar decided to phase the necessary modifications into its range gradually. From September 1967 until production ceased ten months later, the 'E' gradually acquired a number of the characteristics destined for its next incarnation. The fairings were removed to expose the headlight, followed shortly afterwards by a revision of the intake manifold and the adoption of twin Zenith carburetors in place of the three SUs of old.
A mere 2,387 of these curious, almost hybrid machines were built to left hand drive Roadster specification, and the example offered here was built just 190 units before the last. In its third ownership since new, it showed fewer than 77,500 miles when inspected by a Christie's specialist, and boasts a full tonneau cover as well as the original tools and jack.
The paint was renewed towards the beginning of the 1980s and a stainless steel exhaust was fitted recently. Toggle switches adorn the dashboard, and this may well be an original feature, since the new-style rockers were not universal at this point. Not original is the more natural triple carburetion which has been refitted under the bonnet (hood). In all, this charismatic car is presented in well cared-for condition, and is said to drive and run well.
