Lot 310: 1972 Ferrari 246 Dino GT
British & Continental Sports & Touring Motor Cars, Coys (29th March 2008)
The classic and nowadays much sought-after Ferrari 246 Dino GT was named after Enzo Ferrari's son Alfredino, who died in 1956, aged 24 years. Enzo Ferrari credits his son with the inspiration for a series of successful small and medium capacity V6 racing engines built by Ferrari from 1956, and in turn the name was given to a new line of mid-engined production Ferrari V6 coupés which first went on sale in 1969 with the two litre 206 Dino GT. The definitive 246 Dino, with its 2.4 litre V6 engine, appeared in late 1969, and its 175bhp at 7,000rpm and 160lb/ft at 5,500rpm provided a top speed of 141mph and zero to 60mph acceleration in 7.9 seconds. Designed by Pininfarina, the delightful bodywork was built in steel by Scaglietti. It covered a straightforward chassis of tubular steel which carried wishbone/coil spring independent suspension at each corner. The compact engine, with four chain-driven overhead camshafts, was mounted transversely above the five speed gearbox and just ahead of the rear axle line, allowing both a comfortable cockpit and usable boot space. With its flexible engine, uncomplicated chassis and outstanding handling, the 246 Dino GT is a car to combine the best of both worlds; it is a practical Ferrari. Fewer than 4,000 were built (about 1,200 of them the detachable roof spyder GTS version) before the introduction of the slightly larger, and completely re-styled V8-engined 308 Dino in 1973. Finished in red with black and red interior this fine three owner Ferrari is believed to have covered just 44,000 kilometres from new. Recently the recipient of a full service, this superb thoroughbred Italian classic is offered in excellent all round condition. Highly recommended.
