Lot 1025: 1926 Rolls-Royce 40/50hp Phantom I Chassis
Collectors' Motor Cars, Bonhams (24th September 2006)
29NC is a car with a truly international background, an English-built car laid down in 1926 and delivered that year to Parisian coachbuilders, Messrs Hibbard & Darrin, for their esteemed New York customer George White, who commissioned enclosed cabriolet coachwork on this long wheelbase chassis. George White took delivery in June 1927.
This right-hand drive chassis is complete with axles and wheels, brake and gear levers, gearbox, steering wheel column and box, spare wheel mounting bracket and holder, petrol tank suitable for pattern, firewall and luggage grid. An unidentified four-cylinder engine currently rests in the chassis – presumably this proved to be an unhappy marriage.
Frank Cooke acquired this chassis from Long Island many years ago, probably from Sam Adelman’s junk yard, and it has rested outside at North Brookfield for many years. It is offered strictly as viewed and may be considered suitable for spares or as the basis for a major restoration project. Copies of the original Factory and Build Sheets are offered with this chassis.
