Lot 020: 1964 PLYMOUTH SPORT FURY
Cars, H&H Classic Auctions Ltd (27th February 2008)
Although, the Sport Fury made its first appearance as a halo model for Plymouth during 1959, another three years would pass before it became a recurring showroom fixture. Given somewhat controversial styling by Virgil Exner, the 1962 Fury line-up was also notable for its adoption of a proper monocoque bodyshell. Only available as a two-door hardtop or convertible, the Sport Fury shared its four-door sibling's independent torsion-bar front suspension, 'live' rear axle and four-wheel drum brakes. Hurriedly recruited from Ford where he had penned the 1961 Continental, Elwood Engel submitted the 1963-model year Fury and Sport Fury to drastic surgery (a process repeated the following season). Characterised by its bold full-width convex grille housing quad 'floating' headlamps, the 1964-model year Sport Fury also boasted a simplified interior complete with engine-turned interior door trims. Finished in Ruby Red with black vinyl upholstery, this particular left-hand drive example is described by the vendor as being in "superb overall" condition. Reportedly treated to "a new alternator, ignition, HT leads, hydraulic lifters and Holley 4BBL carburettor", its 413ci big block V8 engine is allied to three-speed automatic transmission. Recently overhauled, the latter also sports a "new B&M shift kit". Riding on new Torq Thrust D American Racing Mags shod with fresh Cooper tyres, the hardtop coupe is further understood to benefit from "a 'K' front crossmember, Twin Flow Master exhaust system, cross-drilled / ventilated front discs and sundry rechroming". While, to the interior its black bucket seats are complimented by new door panels and a replacement headliner. A rare beast, this well presented Sport Fury is offered for sale with substantial history file and MOT certificate valid until August 2008. PLEASE NOTE: The vendor has informed us that the front brake discs fitted to this lot are not only new but also have the advantage of a Power Servo. He also adds that the car comes with a recent invoice for over £8,500 spent on cosmetic restoration.
