Lot 37: Rolls-Royce 25/30 LIMOUSINE by Arthur Mulliner
Classic & Collectors' Motor Vehicles, BCA (2nd December 2008)
Rolls-Royce introduced the 25/30 to replace the 20/25 during the latter part of 1936. With the engine capacity now displacing 4¼-litres, larger and more commodious coachwork was able to be fitted to the chassis with no loss of performance. A sign of changing times was the use of various components which were brought in from outside suppliers and which had formerly been manufactured by Rolls-Royce themselves. These were to include SU fuel pumps, Lucas electrical equipment and Zenith-Stromburg carburettors and the 25/30 was priced at £1,050 in chassis form. The 102 wheelbase of the previous model was retained but now the specification included a synchromesh gearbox.
This motor car, Chassis Number GHL38, was manufactured during 1936 and is fitted with limousine coachwork by Arthur Mulliner of Northampton. This company had been established for a great many years number of Rolls-Royce chassis between the wars. During the 1930s, one of their hallmarks was the incorporating of the side lamps into the front mudguards in a distinctive sweep. Bearing its original Grimsby registration number, the motor car is finished in black over cream with the chauffeur's compartment trimmed in black leather whilst beige Bedford cord is used to the rear. We are advised that the vehicle has had just two owners and it is reported to drive very well with no faults apparent, seemingly never having undergone restoration as such, merely being maintained over the years. In recent times it has seen service as a wedding carriage, a purpose for which it is eminently well suited
