Lot 242: 1933 Morgan Super Sports
Motor cars, Bonhams (31st August 2007)
Presented in immaculate and fully restored condition, this wonderful Morgan Super Sports has been in the same family’s ownership for over 40 years. It was first registered on 7th March 1933 and dispatched two days later to the Morgan dealer, Granfield Lawrence. It still carries its original registration number ‘AGH 44’ and retains its original 60-degree JAP v-twin ngine, number ‘LTOWZ/Z/26451/SM’. As an early version of the Super Sports three-speeder, the car carries the desirable ‘beetle back’ coachwork and nickel-silver radiator with honeycomb core, while other attractive features include a twin float chamber AMAL carburettor.
For the first 30 years of this car’s life with the vendor’s family it was off the road and in dry storage, but over the last nine to ten years has been through an exacting restoration costing in excess of £45,000 (copy invoices available). This was carried out by well known racing specialists Stanton Motor Sports with more recent work to complete the car being undertaken by marque expert Chris Booth. The vendor has gone to enormous lengths to preserve as many of the original parts as possible. For example: nearly all of the body’s original metal panels have been retained (the only replacement part being the steel skirt) and even the original rear numberplate has been restored rather than replaced. Because the original wooden body tub was too structurally unsound to use, it has been replaced with a new one, which has been stamped with the original body number, ‘620’. (Both the original body tub and steel skirt are available if desired). All mechanical parts have been fully overhauled; in short, the car is effectively as new. A foot brake conversion and 12-volt electrics – both very sensible upgrades - are the only notified deviations from factory specification.
‘AGH 44’ is said by all those who have seen her to be one of the finest, if not the finest, early Super Sports in existence. It is now well on the way to being run in following restoration and should provide the new owner with very many trouble free and enjoyable miles of motoring. The car is offered with old-style logbook and recently expired MoT certificate (August 2008) while we understand that the registration document is currently with the DVLA.
