Lot 315: 1966 Aston Martin DB6
The Jaguar Legend, Coys (18th June 2005)
After only a two year run, the Aston Martin DB5 was replaced by the DB6, which, apart from being extensively restyled with more raked-windscreen, higher roofline and longer wheelbase, had a model-distinctive Kamm-back tail treatment. The new Aston was made quite differently, too, with the extremely complicated Superleggara body structure of its predecessor abandoned in favour of a more practical steel chassis, still clothed in just as shapely aluminium body panels. Aston's own 6-cylinder motor had only recently been enlarged to 3995cc for the DB5 and remained unchanged under the DB6 bonnet, though with Vantage-spec option. Auto-shift could be specified as could power-assisted steering, which became optional for the first time. This early DB6 first left the Aston Martin works in Newport Pagnell in 1966, the two-door coupe having a ZF 5-speed manual gearbox, more desirable in the retro-market than the Borg Warner automatic transmission version, and a Webasto sunroof, which was a popular up-grade in period.Requiring some restoration work through having been unused for some years, the seriously good looking fixed head has been partly restored with refurbishment carried out to all exterior chrome work, and wire wheels rebuilt and shod with new tyres. The original leather is all in good condition, though the carpets could do with renewal. Apart from a front grille and an exhaust system, the rest of the GT, which can accommodate four of course, is said to be complete. According to the vendor, the 3995cc 6-cylinder engine has been run and records good oil pressure with no obvious faults apparent. Previous owner history is on file, as is a V5 confirming the KCX 132D registration for this Aston, which is actually very presentable and does offer a new owner here today enormous potential for further improvement.
