Lot 202: Porsche 928 Coupe
British Heritage + Classic Cars, Barons (11th September 2007)
If there ever was an underrated motor car it was and is the Porsche 928. First seen way back in 1978 but development began in 1971. Porsche management believed that the venerable air-cooled 911 series could not possibly continue indefinitely given ever restricting regulations on noise, emissions and the crashworthiness of rear-engined cars. Porsche also realised that they needed to compete in the, the horsepower-driven and very lucrative American market, which is where half of all new car sales were being made.Power-plants considered for the 928 included a V6 but fortunately, for 928 enthusiasts, an all-alloy, 4.5 litre, 16-valve, SOHC V8, which was an "In House" design, became the chosen power-plant.The example offered here is an early USA specification car, which is surprisingly, for an American spec car, equipped with the rare 5-speed manual transmission. Less than 1 in 3 928's were so equipped, which is a shame because the manual box releases the true identity of the car making it a real drivers machine. Power is more than adequate, handling is excellent and the cabin is luxurious. The 928 is the least expensive supercar that money can buy.Imported into the UK in 1984 the car comes with extensive history and just 76000 miles on the odometer, which is warranted, by the vendor, as being correct. The car is described as being in good to excellent condition and is complete with an MoT through to March 2008.
