Lot 21: MG A Roadster
Vintage, Classic and Collectors' Motor Vehicles, BCA (7th October 2008)
Introduced in 1955 as the much-awaited replacement for the ageing TF Series Midget, the MG A looked every inch a modern sports car. Here at last was an MG to compete in the appearance stakes with the Triumph TR2, Austin-Healey 100 and the Jaguar XK140. Powered by a BMC B-Series engine in twin carburettor form, developing 68bhp, the MG A was endowed with brisk acceleration and a maximum speed approaching the then-magical 'ton'. Available as a two-seat roadster or an attractive fixed head coupé from 1956, the MG A continued in production, undergoing two increases in engine size until finally being superseded by the MG B in July 1962.
A 1958 roadster, this example is an original UK specification right-hand-drive car and was prepared for historic rallying during 2001. The vendor informs us that the engine was fully rebuilt, lightened and balanced whilst the gearbox and rear axle also received major attention and new clutch was fitted. The car has been campaigned successfully and competed in the Monte Carlo historic rally from 2002 until 2008, coming first in class in 2006 and 2007. 2005 saw a second in class at Sternbeck Hill Climb in the Czech Republic. The vehicle's equipment includes a tripmeter, sump guard and alternator along with a quick-release handbrake. Five extra wheels with studded tyres are included, along with the bumpers.
In all, this would seem to be a very well sorted and competitive MG A and it is offered with a current FIVA Passport, V5 document and MOT certificate valid until January 2009. Various additional paperwork is also to be supplied.
