Lot 438: 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Coupé
Goodwood Festival of Speed, Bonhams (22nd June 2007)
Ford created a new class of car almost overnight with the introduction of the Mustang sports coupe part way through the 1964 season. Aimed at the affluent young, for whom a car was as much a lifestyle statement as means of transport, the Mustang succeeded brilliantly, achieving sales in excess of a quarter million by the end of ’64. A new, restyled and enlarged Mustang was Ford’s big news for 1969. Boasting quad headlights for the first time on a Mustang, the top-of-the-range model was the awesome Mach 1 that came with a 351ci (5.7-litre) 250bhp V8 engine as standard equipment, with even more powerful 390ci GT and 428ci Cobra Jet units available as extra cost options.
This example of the fabulous Mustang Mach 1 has the 390ci (6.4-litre) GT V8 engine with four-barrel carburettor producing 320bhp, and was considered superior to the Shelby GT350 when manufactured. Generously equipped as benefited the flagship model, the Mach 1 included Hi-Back bucket seats, competition suspension, additional instruments, hood scoop and a console-mounted gearshift in its list of standard equipment, to which this particular example adds the desirable option of four-speed manual transmission. Restored in 2005 at a cost exceeding £21,000, it comes with relevant invoices and current MoT certificate. Offered without reserve.
