Lot 106: Standard Vanguard Phase

The Standard Motor Company launched one of its most famous and successful post-war models in 1947, the Vanguard. The Vanguard was a completely new design, its exterior styling being reminiscent of many contemporary US saloons, especially the Plymouth fastback. The bold four door body featured a distinctive, sloping rear boot lid and an attractive "wrap-around" grille.Although the Vanguard still had a separate chassis the mechanical specification was thoroughly modern and included all-synchromesh gears, independent front coil suspension and hydraulic brakes. Beneath the Vanguards bonnet sat an all new four cylinder engine of 2088cc complete with overhead valves. The Vanguard was an instant success and sold well at home and abroad in the all important export markets. Production of the initial Phase I Vanguard ceased in 1952 after 184,799 units had been sold.Offered here is a late Phase I Vanguard, which the vendor describes as being in extremely sound and original condition. The bodywork is said to be rust free and the original interior has suffered only minor wear and tear.Finished in silver grey with grey interior, the car is equipped with a 2088cc, 4 cylinder engine and a 3 speed manual transmission. The car is said to drive well and is offered complete with an original owners manual, MoT through to May 2008 and free historic tax through to August 2008.
