Lot 690: 1972 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray 7.4-Litre Coupé
Five years after the Sting Ray’s arrival, a total re-style ushered in the Corvette’s ‘Stingray’ era, though the latter name was not officially applied to the new model until 1969. Based on GM’s 1965 Mako Shark II show car, the new-for-’68 Corvette coupé became a ‘notchback’ with removable rear window and detachable, two-piece ‘T-top’ (Targa) roof, while the roadster, or convertible, version could be ordered with optional hardtop. The previous generation’s recessed pop-up headlights were retained while the windshield wipers were now concealed beneath a vacuum-operated panel, the latter feature being inherited from the Mako Shark II. Beneath the skin the chassis remained fundamentally unchanged, and as is often the case after a major revamp, changes in the immediately succeeding years were confined mainly to styling revisions, although a ‘Positraction’ (limited-slip) rear axle was newly standardised for 1972. By this time Federal emissions legislation was beginning to have an impact on power outputs, resulting in the optional 454ci (7.4-litre) LS5 V8 engine producing ‘only’ 270bhp (down from 365 horsepower the year before) which nevertheless was good enough to propel the ’Vette through the standing quarter-mile in 14.1 seconds with a terminal velocity of 93mph – figures on a par with those of the V12-engined Jaguar E-Type.
This Corvette Stingray T-top Coupé has the optional 454ci V8 engine, automatic transmission, air conditioning, power steering and electric windows, and was first registered in the UK on 23rd June 1972. (It should be noted that although it is understood that the vehicle was new at time of first registration in the UK, the V5C registration document states that it was ‘registered/used overseas’). What is certain is that the car was in this country by 1976, as ‘LYX 330K’ was featured in Motor Sport magazine’s June edition that year, albeit mistakenly referred to as a 1971 model (copy article available).
Always maintained by Claremont Corvette, of Snodland, Kent, the UK’s foremost marque specialists, the car is in magnificent condition, possessing immaculate yellow paintwork and retaining its original dark brown leather interior. We are advised by the vendor that the engine and gearbox perform faultlessly, that everything is in working order and that the 64,545 mileage total recorded on the odometer is verified by accompanying documentation including all MoTs and service invoices, etc. The car is offered with MoT to 10th July 2008 and Swansea V5 registration document.
