Lot 053: Jaguar E-Type S2 Roadster
Brightwells Classic Car Auction, Brightwells Auctioneers and Valuers (11th July 2007)
Although die-hard E-Type aficionados will always claim that the Series 1 is the car to have, in the real world there is no doubt that the Series 2, launched in October 1968, is the better car to drive. Visually distinguished by its slightly higher, uncowled front headlights, wider front grille and different tail lights, it had twin fans for better cooling, an all-synchro gearbox, better seats, improved switchgear and slightly more room in the cabin. This 1969 car was imported from America in 1990 and was purchased by the current vendor in 1996. He had the car converted to RHD by marque specialists M&C Wilkinson of Doncaster in 1997 and in 1999 had a new mohair hood fitted by acknowledged leaders in their field, Suffolk & Turley. In December 2000 the car was further treated to a full engine rebuild and unleaded conversion by another top name, RS Panels of Nuneaton. Maintained regardless of cost, this car has always been regularly used by its enthusiast owner and has completed many classic tours, both here and on the continent, during which it has "never missed a beat". Said to drive superbly and to be utterly reliable, it also looks very fine with a nicely patinated interior and excellent bodywork. With an MOT until August and free to tax, this is a thoroughly sorted car that you could jump into and drive anywhere in considerable style and complete confidence. All at a very realistic guide price.
