Lot 13: Ford Escort XR3i Cabriolet

More than just a fuel-injected version of the MKIII Escort XR3, the first generation XR3i was some fifteen months in the making. Developed by Ford's SVE (Special Vehicle Engineering) department under the supervision of Ron Mansfield, it debuted in January 1983. Utilising the same three-door monocoque bodyshell equipped with all-round independent suspension (McPherson strut front / transverse arm rear), rack and pinion steering and disc / drum brakes as its predecessor, a comprehensive recalibration programme saw the newcomer enjoy a more comfortable ride and better road manners. Credited with some 105bhp and 102lbft of torque thanks to the adoption of Bosch K-Jetronic fuel-injection, the XR3i's 1597cc SOHC four-cylinder engine was mated to five-speed manual transmission. Distinguished by bespoke alloys and a prominent lip spoiler, it was reputedly capable of 120mph and 0-60mph in 8.5 seconds. Available in both hatchback and convertible guises, the Fast Ford quickly captured the imagination of a generation. Forming an integral part of the Escort MKIV launch range during 1986, the XR3i remains prized by enthusiasts to this day. Finished in metallic blue with grey leather upholstery, this particular convertible example is described by the vendor as being in "good" condition with regard to its engine, gearbox, electrical equipment, interior trim, bodywork and paintwork. Stated to have covered just 66,442 miles, 'G565 PRH' has reportedly been in the possession of "two owners and the supplying dealer from new". Said to benefit from a "full service history", (it was apparently "last serviced at 64,000 miles"), the XR3i also boasts a blue power hood and red / blue seat inserts. Summed-up by the seller as "a really genuine, original car", it is hoped but not promised that the Ford will have a fresh MOT certificate by the time of sale.
