Lot 681: 1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 2+2 Coupé

Important Collectors' Motor Cars, and Motorcycles, Bonhams (4th December 2006)

1970 Jaguar E-Type Series II 2+2 Coupé
Launched in October 1964, the 4.2-litre version of Jaguar’s sensational E-Type sports car brought with it a more user friendly all-synchromesh gearbox and superior Lockheed brake servo along with the bigger, torquier engine. At around 150mph, top speed remained virtually unchanged, the main performance gain resulting from the capacity increase being improved acceleration. Apart from ‘4.2’ badging, the car’s external appearance was unchanged, but there were numerous detail improvements, chiefly to the electrical and cooling systems, and to the seating arrangements. The 4.2-litre E-Type was built in roadster and coupé forms, and in 1966 gained an additional 2+2 variant on a 9”-longer wheelbase. Intended to extend the E-Type’s appeal beyond the traditional sportscar-buying market, the new ‘family orientated’ coupé came with improved visibility thanks to an increased glass area, greater headroom, improved heating and ventilation, additional luggage space and optional Borg-Warner automatic transmission. Changes to the USA’s safety and emissions legislation prompted the revised Series II of 1968. The headlight fairings were deleted and enlarged side and rear lights adopted, while a thickened front bumper centre section bridged a larger radiator intake. Interior changes included a collapsible steering column, and rocker switches in place of the earlier toggles. This unrestored 4.2-litre Series II 2+2 has the desirable manual transmission. The car was much loved by a previous owner who cherished it for several years, before selling and then repurchasing it (after a separation of three years) seven years ago. It is strongly recommended that prospective purchasers inspect the substantial history file, which contains numerous service/maintenance invoices and other documentation. The car is offered with current road fund licence, MoT to December 2007 and Swansea V5 registration document.
