Lot 046: Fiat 124 Spider

Launched at the Turin Motor Show in November 1966, the Pininfarina-styled 124 Spider was an outstanding success for Fiat, over 200,000 being sold before production ended in 1985, the vast majority to America. Based on a shortened 124 saloon floorpan, it was powered by a range of double overhead cam 4-cylinder engines from 1.4 to 2-litres in size, all designed by ex-Ferrari chief engineer Aurelio Lampredi. With features like four wheel disc brakes, 5-speed gearbox, intermittent wipers and steering column mounted lighting controls, it was well ahead of its time at launch. The hood design was especially praised as it could be raised and locked in place in just 15 seconds.A 1977 model, this car has the 118bhp 1.8-litre engine that is good for 115mph. Imported from America in 1994, it was professionally converted to right-hand drive by DTR in London. It comes with service history dating back to March 2000 including bills for an engine overhaul undertaken in May 2002 at 45,906 miles (current reading circa 50,100), recent front suspension and brake overhaul, new soft top and stainless-steel exhaust system.
