Lot 145: 1995 Porsche 968 Sport
The Excellence of Porsche, Coys (9th September 2007)
1995 Porsche 968 SportRegistration Number: G16 DAL Chassis Number: WPOZZZ96ZSS81When in November 1975 Porsche launched the 924, it marked a radical departure for the company; not only did it have a front engine, it was also water rather than air-cooled. The 1,984cc four cylinder, single camshaft, engine, producing 125bhp at 5,800rpm and 1221b.ft at 3,500rpm via Bosch fuel injection, was mated to a four-speed transaxle. Beneath the 2+2 coupé body, the steel monocoque sported independent suspension, allowing excellent road holding. Answering criticism against the Volkswagen derived engine, Porsche introduced the 944 in 1982 sporting a 2.5 litre four cylinder Porsche engine, essentially half of the V8 engine from the 928. Bodywork modifications to the basic 924 shell included wider wheel arches at the front and back, giving the car a much more aggressive stance. Over the next few years, Porsche offered a wider choice of engine options and in 1990 a mid-range model, the S2, became available with a high torque three litre engine producing 211bhp. Development of an S3 model to replace the S2, however, saw so many of the 944's components modified or replaced that Porsche decided to launch the variant as a new model, and thus the 968 was introduced. Powered by an updated version of the 944's three litre, four cylinder engine, now producing 240bhp, other changes to the 968's power train included VarioCam variable valve timing, newly-optimised induction and exhaust systems, a dual-mass flywheel and updated engine management electronics. The engine had already become the second largest four cylinder ever offered in a production car, and in the 968 it also became the most powerful normally-aspirated four cylinder motor ever to be sold in a production automobile. Manufactured in 1995, this 968 Sport is described by the vendor as being in very good condition throughout. Finished in white with a black leather and cloth interior piped in white, the car is also fitted with a ten disc CD player. To completely standard specification and unmodified in any way, it was serviced by the previous owner's own garage and has been well maintained throughout its life. The engine is described as being in good condition and the manual gearbox is said to be in excellent order. With a MoT test certificate valid until April next year and road fund licence valid until February 2008, this car is ready to be enjoyed.Estimate£10,000-£14,000
