Lot 129: 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS Recreation
The Excellence of Porsche, Coys (9th September 2007)
1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS ReplicaRegistration Number: EUF 342L Chassis Number: 9113501569One of the most famous Porsches ever built, the Carrera RS has come to be regarded as one of the top sports cars to emerge from the 1970s. It was designed with ambivalence very much in mind: Porsche's engineers wanted a car that could be successfully used on the race track and the road. Few people could ever argue that they did not succeed in their aim, for the RS is an eminently useable car just as at home trickling through traffic as it is ploughing down the overtaking lane of the autobahn; yet when competing at Le Mans, Daytona and in the Targa Florio it was almost invincible, often winning outright against pure racing prototypes. The RS (for Rennsport) was based on the 911 model but used lightened bodywork and a revised 2.7 litre, fuel-injected version of the ubiquitous flat-six cylinder engine, the largest then used in a road-going Porsche. With a weight of around 950kg and an honest 210bhp on tap the RS could sprint from standstill to 60mph in just over five seconds and achieve a genuine 158mph; it was one of the fastest production cars in the world. Today, it remains a rare, much sought after and invariably very expensive Porsche, which has led to the creation of many replicas being built to RS specification. This superb, right-hand drive, 911 Carrera RS 2.7 replica was professionally converted to the very highest of standards. Its impressive mechanical specification includes an ex-race car three litre engine, a gearbox completely rebuilt by Bob Watson Engineering, a limited slip differential, larger torsion bars, fully adjustable Penske dampers, bigger anti-roll bars and a welded strut brace. The equally well-presented bodywork features a lightweight Kevlar bonnet, RS bumpers and correct, period Durant chromed mirrors, while the interior boasts an M471 roll-over cage, fully plumbed-in fire extinguisher system, the correct RS dashboard, VDU instruments, carpets, rubber mats and headlining - the latter, like the toughened glass, is new - all of which is complemented by a sturdy footrest adjacent to the clutch pedal and a suede MoMo steering wheel. Evocatively finished in Gulf Blue with black trim, this RS replica is arguably one of the finest-handling examples available, its beautifully balanced chassis set up to be equally at home on the road as it on the track; add to that the acceleration and straight line speed provided by its race-prepared engine and the car represents a potent package. Accompanying this Porsche is a substantial history file, including receipts totalling more than £110,000 for work carried out between 1994 and 2006. A finely detailed and highly desirable motor car, it is offered in excellent condition and comes with a V5 registration document, road fund licence valid until December and a MoT test certificate valid until July 2008.Estimate£32,000-£40,000
