Lot 380: 1933 Austin 7hp Box Saloon
Collectors' Motor Cars and Motorcycles, Bonhams (15th November 2006)
By 1933 the Austin 7 had been in production for 11 years, graduating from the fragile and splindly 649cc model of 1922 to the significantly more robust 747cc engined models of the 1930’s. The larger engine developed significantly more power and the ‘box saloon’ of 1933 really was a quite roomy four seater, well furnished and with improved suspension, brakes and lighting. It jockeyed for position with the Morris Minor and the Ford 8 for the major slice of the first time car buyer market.
This example was in the process of restoration at the time of George Fearn’s death. Much of the work is well advanced and the coachwork, excluding the bonnet, is quite smartly presented in blue and black livery with blue vinyl upholstery (part completed) to the interior. The wiring and instrumentation is incomplete as are the steering column controls and the car is fitted with good tyres. The car now represents a very worthwhile and straightforward restoration project. It comes with a Swansea V5C registration document and an old style (part complete) buff log book. We note that the engine number in those documents does not correspond with the number on the car.
