Lot 428: 1953 Riley RME Saloon

The most popular Riley of the immediate post-war years was the 1.5-litre RMA sports saloon, which came with torsion bar independent front suspension, hydro-mechanical brakes and Riley’s classic twin-camshaft, overhead-valve, four-cylinder engine. An improved version - the RME, with fully hydraulic brakes - appeared in 1952 and continued in production until 1955. The final Rileys that retained any links with the marque’s glorious past, these well engineered and luxuriously equipped coachbuilt sports saloons enjoy an enthusiastic and loyal following today. This RME has been treated to an extensive restoration, both inside and out. Undertaken during 1998/99, the work included a full interior refurbishment: the dash and door cappings were re-veneered in burr walnut and the front seats rebuilt/re-covered in green leather-cloth, while the headlining, carpets, speedometer, heater and all door trim panels were replaced. All brightwork inside and out has been re-plated (except the radiator cowl), the paintwork refinished in black/cream, and the vinyl roof recovered. In addition, the engine received new pistons, valves and guides; the petrol tank sender unit was replaced and flashing indicators fitted. Since the loss of its garage 18 months ago the car has been kept in the open but has continued to be regularly used. It is offered with MoT/road fund licence to August 2007 and Swansea V5. No reserve.
