The Citroën TPV (Toute Petite Voiture very small car) was initially conceived in the 1930s. By the outbreak of WWII, several prototypes had been built but these were hidden, destroyed or disguised during the German occupation. Subsequently it was decided that these prototypes were not viable for production due the the large quantities of aluminium alloys used and the rising costs of these materials in the post-war economy. Re-engineered in steel, a new prototype was shown at the Paris Salon in 1948, almost identical to the car to be put on sale the following year. Initially, this most rudimentry of cars was spurned by the press though public opinion was not swayed and within months there was a three-year waiting list for delivery. Between 1953 and 1959, 2CVs were produced at Citroën's factory in Slough, though the British market did not take kindly to them and official imports were not to recommence until 1974. Now a much improved car from the initial 374cc, the engine has grown to 602cc but the motoring is still basic, if just a little more refined. This 1978 example has been in the hands of a former president of the 2CV Club of Great Britain for the past eighteen years, he having purchased it from its original owner. Finished in Mysotis blue with black Targa trim, the car has benefitted from rustproofing from new, with regular top-ups in the cavities. Remaining in remarkable condition, this 2CV has been much admired for its originality, including period accessories such as the roof ariel, window catches, wind deflector for the sunroof and rare 'cowcatcher' front and rear 'adventure' bumpers. With genuine, original 1970s' examples now something of a rarity, this example is ready for immediate use and, of course, is supported by an enthusiastic club with many local, national and international events and knowlegeable trade specialists.
