Lot 219: 1968 Triumph 2000 Estate
Porsche and Lotus Motor Cars, Bonhams (26th July 2008)
Standard-Triumph’s first new model following its take-over by Leyland, the Michelotti-styled Triumph 2000 was launched in 1963. The engine and gearbox were basically those of the Vanguard Six, but the unitary construction body and running gear were all new, featuring McPherson strut independent front suspension, front disc brakes and independent rear suspension, the latter appearing for the first time on a ‘big’ Triumph. Although somewhat overshadowed by the technically more adventurous Rover 2000, the cheaper Triumph had the advantage of a silky-smooth six-cylinder engine, while its overdrive and automatic transmission options were unavailable in the Rover.
Owned by Richard Lloyd for the past few years, this rare Triumph 2000 Estate was last on the road in 1989. The car is in very original condition; although not a runner, the engine turns freely, while the chassis/body and interior are in generally good condition. The six-cylinder Triumphs are particularly well served by owners’ clubs, spares suppliers and other specialists, all of which makes this comfortable, spacious and thoroughly practical classic a potentially most worthwhile restoration project. The car is offered with Swansea V5. No reserve.
