Lot 252: 1972 Porsche 911T 2.4
Les Grandes Marques a Monaco, Bonhams (20th May 2006)
Hailed as ‘a car for enthusiasts’ by Germany’s auto motor und sport when it went on sale in 1964, the Porsche 911 has achieved the remarkable – unique, even – feat of remaining in production for over 40 years, during which time it has achieved iconic status. The car offered here is a well-presented left-hand drive example of the entry-level 911T, which was fitted with a four-speed gearbox. It is finished in the striking shade of Viper Green with black leather trim. It was restored in 2004 and given an engine overhaul and repaint. The 2500 km shown on the odometer is believed to represent the distance covered since restoration.
Interior trim appears in good condition and a Momo sports steering wheel is fitted. The car has been equipped with a twin-pipe sports exhaust – the original single pipe system is with the car – and a tool pouch is included. With the more exotic variants of the infinitely versatile 911 selling now for well over €100,000, the 911T represents remarkable value for money and is arguably the most fun to drive; indeed, early in its career a 911T won the 1967 European saloon rally championship. Moreover, the 2.4-litre flat-six engine fitted to this car is designed to run on normal pump fuel.
Even in its early years, the Porsche 911 was a wonderful driver's car, with comfortable seating, high build quality and far greater sophistication than other sports cars of that era. Moreover, as Automobile Quarterly commented: "This is a very competent and nimble car that was easy to drive in traffic and offered strong acceleration for its day."
With Italian registration documents, this is a fine and eminently usable example of the legendary "Elfer", a design that was so right at the beginning that its timeless looks still seem modern after four decades in production.
