Lot 337: 1972 Ferrari Dino 246GTS Targa Coupé
Sports, Competition & Collectors Motor Cars, Bonhams (19th September 2008)
As the first series-produced, mid-engined Ferraris, the early Dino V6s are landmark cars and the line they founded would prove to be an immense commercial success for Maranello. The original 2.0-litre Dino 206 was replaced in 1969 by a longer-wheelbase 2.4-litre version: the 246GT. Previously alloy, the body was now steel and the cylinder block cast-iron rather than aluminium, but the bigger engine’s increased power - 195bhp at 7,600rpm - was adequate compensation for the weight gain. While not as fast in a straight line as its V12-engined stablemates, the nimble Dino was capable of showing almost anything a clean pair of heels over twisty going. Truly a driver’s car par excellence.
First registered in May 1972, this right-hand drive 246GTS was purchased by the vendor in July 1999 from a Mr I J Calder, who had acquired it in May 1981. During 1982 Mr Calder had the engine/gearbox stripped and rebuilt and some bodywork refurbishment undertaken, the recorded mileage at that time being 40,046. When the current owner (the vehicle’s fourth) purchased it in 1999 the mileage had risen to 47,057. The Dino’s colour at the time was metallic blue. The vendor used the car for a short time and then put it into storage.
Approximately two years later he had the Dino completely stripped and a full body restoration was carried out. The engine and gearbox were removed and sent to Kent High Performance in Maidstone, where they were stripped and checked, all worn parts being replaced, and the cylinder heads converted to accept lead-free petrol. The car was repainted Ferrari yellow and then transported to Kent High Performance to have the brakes overhauled, the suspension checked and the engine and gearbox reinstalled. The complete interior, including dashboard, was re-trimmed in leather.
Since the restoration’s completion approximately two years ago, the car has covered circa 190 miles only and remains in very good condition. The present recorded mileage is 47,442. Offered with assorted expired MoTs, correspondence concerning mileage, Swansea V5 document, current road fund licence and MoT to August 2009, this car represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a rebuilt Ferrari Dino, ready to enjoy.
