Bristol cars of the 1940's and 50's had a style, charm and 'new world' efficiency that was unequalled at the time. They were an offshoot of the Bristol Aeroplane Company which, post-war, had decided to expand its activities and brought much of its aeronautical expertise and technology to bear in the manufacture of motor cars. Plans were for a technically advanced lightweight saloon, and with the 400 Bristol, excelled themselves in producing a car to this specification. The body was of alloy and had an aerodynamic tear-drop shape allowing four to travel in great comfort. The 403 was fitted with a new and more powerful type 100A engine which was combined with a new gearbox to make the 403 a strong performer. Improvements were also made to the braking system, suspension and interior appointments, such as heating and ventilation. The overall result was a great success and sales of the 275 cars built were brisk. This once elegant example of Bristol's craft was the subject of a restoration that has yet to be completed. The chassis has been re-furbished as has the complicated wiring set-up found in these cars. TKX 64, a rolling chassis, benefits from a brand new £1,000 fuel tank as well as a complete re-paint. The interior still needs to be cleaned and re-fitted but certainly represents a potentially rewarding project upon which much of the hard work has already been completed. Accompanying this car is a comprehensive history file as well as those immortal words, No Reserve.
