Lot 414: 1964 Bentley S3 6.2-litre Standard Steel Saloon
Rolls-Royce, Bentley & Selected Pre-War Motor Cars, Bonhams (11th June 2005)
The last of the line of the S-series Bentleys, the S3, was introduced in 1962, retaining the 6,230cc, V8 engine first seen, (to the horror of traditionalists), in the S2 of 1959. For the S3 model 2-inch SU carburettors were standard and the engine compression ratio was raised to 9:1, resulting in a most useful additional 15bhp. Improved servo assistance lightened the steering while passenger comfort was enhanced by luxurious separate seats for the driver and front passenger, with more leg room in the rear. Styling changes included the provision of twin headlamps, a lower radiator and bonnet line, with front sidelamps moving from the wing tops to the leading edge. As a long distance touring car the S3 was unmatched, with a purposeful top speed boosted to 116mph, should that ever have been required. Just 1,286 S3 models were built compared with 2,044 Silver Cloud III’s.
B56FG was sold new through J Cockshoot Ltd. of Manchester to Brian Cornall of Bolton, Lancashire, who specified electric windows, an auxiliary petrol tank, GB plate, badge bar and Avon tubeless tyres. In 1978 it was sold to Seblingham Ltd, believed to be associated with the Cornall family, and in 1989, some 16 years ago, was acquired by its third owner, the late Peter Baines, who used the car extensively in R-R.E.C. events and in carrying out his many official duties on behalf of the Club. Peter carefully maintained the car’s originality, retaining the sable over sand colour scheme which is complemented by the original tan leather upholstery. Although areas of the paintwork will now benefit from cosmetic attention, this is a handsome car that stands well and is offered with jack, wheelbrace, etc, a small number of tools, owner’s handbook and a complete workshop manual. It comes with a Swansea registration document and current MoT certificate.
B56FG will forever be associated with the name Peter Baines, the driving force and steadying hand of the R-R.E.C. for so many years.
