Lot 220: 1937 Austin A10 Saloon
Spirit of Motoring, Coys (29th September 2005)
Austin produced three models in the 1920's, the ever popular Seven, the reliable (both in terms of running and sales!) Twelve, and the larger, more refined Twenty. Through the Thirties however, this range diversified, with more choice of model, and various 4 and 6 cylinder engine options. The best seller was the Ten Four introduced in May 1932 and made until 1947. It had a side valve 21bhp engine of 1125cc and a gearbox with four forward speeds. Originally made only as a 4-door saloon, it was available with cabriolet, tourer and roadster bodies from 1933. Synchromesh came in 1934, and the bodies were restyled for 1935 and again for 1937 and 1939, by which time a saloon was again the only offering. As with the larger Austins of the 1930's, the Ten's body styles were named after English towns and villages - among the better known examples were the Sherborne, Lichfield and Cambridge saloons, the Eton 2-seater and Ripley sports tourer, although the regular tourer was simply called the open road. Total production of Tens up to 1939 was 161,584, easily outselling rival tens from Morris, Standard or Wolseley. This remarkable survivor from 1937 is offered with an interesting and varied history folder, complete with period log books, handbooks, club memorabilia, and invoices. It has been garaged for many years and remains in good order and comes complete with the registration mark DOG 788 !
