Lot 167: c.1957 Maicoletta 277cc
Professor Fritz Ehn Motorcycle Museum Collection, Bonhams (30th June 2008)
Introduced in 1955, the Maicoletta was the second of Maicos scooter designs and like the first the gargantuan Mobil incorporated 14 wheels, telescopic front forks and a foot-operated gearshift. Even the most discerning rider will find that everything a modern scooter can offer in the way of comfort has been incorporated, its maker claimed. Which was just as well as the Maicoletta was certainly lacking in visual appeal when compared to the Italian opposition. Versions with 174cc and 247cc single-cylinder two-stroke engines were available initially, and then in the autumn of 1957 Maico announced the 277cc Maicoletta, which remained one of the largest-engined scooters ever made until relatively recent times. A must have for serious scooter collectors, this original and unrestored 277cc Maicoletta was acquired for the Museum in 1983. The machine is offered without documents.
