Lot 120: Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500
Classic Cars, Barons (24th October 2006)
The Sierra Cosworth was a car of its time with the RS500 as the ultimate expression of the model. The RS500 were very quick road cars of the period and dominated Touring Car racing in the eighties.Designed purely to compete in World, European and British Touring Car racing the Sierra Cosworth was an Homologation special and the RS500 was a development of the car to remain competitive against the BMW M3, Mercedes 190 Cosworth Evolution and others. The 500 in the title denotes the number of cars produced in order to meet the FIA ruling for production based touring cars. The example offered here is said to be the first RS500 built, to have originally been in the hands of a Ford Main Dealer then three other owners and to have always been garaged. The vendor states that the car is in very good order throughout and has benefited from a full engine rebuild in 1998, despite having covered only 38,000 miles. With a 2.0, turbocharged engine, a specially constructed body shell, race bred suspension and brakes, the RS500 still offers breathtaking performance, superb handling and amazing stopping power, yet it is still capable of being used as a shopping car.
