Lot 103: 1975 Honda 1000cc Gold Wing
Motorcycles featuring Michael Corbin Collection, Bonhams & Butterfields (3rd May 2008)
Whilst the 1968 CB750 made a profound global statement on Honda’s behalf, and confirmed their technical expertise to discerning riders everywhere, it also prompted the Fraternal Four’s other three members into vigorous Catch Up mode. In fact by 1975 Honda were in desperate need of a further equally profound global statement. This was duly provided with the 1975 launch of the GL1000 Gold Wing, which, in its original naked form, was classified as a Heavyweight Sports Tourer. A surprising lack of onboard touring equipment, back then, triggered a boom for accessory producers that Honda didn’t even begin to outmatch for a further five years. The Wing has since evolved into one of the greatest motorcycles in the history of civilized (i.e. non-competitive) motorcycling. Three decades down the road it is a claim that’s firmly endorsed by the model’s relentless sales momentum.
That from the beginning such a weighty behemoth would prove so manageable was due to the fundamentally sound design. Very few riders, historically, have found riding a Wing to be an intimidating experience. This is primarily thanks to a sensibly positioned seat height, linked to the low center of gravity. Indeed, in some quarters an early un-equipped Wing is today considered almost nimble!
In the present ownership for twelve years this early example of the genre is fitted with a compatibly contoured Corbin saddle, and with aqua paintwork for the fuel tank, side panels, and radiator surround. An indicated mileage of just over 47,000 miles reconciles with the vendor’s claim of Excellent Condition. Sold on a California Certificate of Title.
