Lot 226: 1964 Ford Thunderbird Convertible

Fine Motor Cars And The Jaguar Legend, Coys (24 June 2006)

The Thunderbird was launched in 1955, being Ford's answer to the Chevrolet Corvette, which was having things largely its own way in the rapidly growing market of rich young Americans who wanted a sleek and sporting car. Sales estimates for the first two years of production were far in excess of the predicted figures, trouncing the Corvette and forcing some dramatic rethinking at General Motors. Ford, however, deemed that the only modifications that needed to be made to the Thunderbird were safety features like energy absorbing instrument panel padding and safety door latches, plus practical developments that enhanced the car's usability. The next body restyling came in 1964. It was known as the "Jet Bird" model line. The wheel base was lengthened to 113 inches and the overall length of the car was 205 inches. This new body style consisted of shorter roof lines, a newly designed rear-end, and a longer hood and rear deck lid. The convertible option was still available during the '64 model year and power was provided by a 390 cubic-inch V8 which produced 300-340 horsepower.Manufactured in 1964, this Thunderbird is presented in excellent condition, resplendent in red with a red interior. The car has benefited from having one owner from new until 2004. The car had a comprehensive restoration in 1992 and is supplied with a new hood. The roof is hydraulically operated and 'disappears' into the boot at the rear in a matter of seconds. DHJ 457B is supplied with the original owners manual and service book as well as the original sales invoice. Other documentation includes a V5 document and a current MoT certificate valid until 2007.
