Lot 489: Douglas 348cc Model B29
Sale of Collectors' Motorcycles, Bonhams (23rd April 2006)
Winner of the inaugural Isle of Man Sidecar TT in 1923 when he rode the legendary Douglas 'banking' sidecar outfit, ace rider/engineer Freddie Dixon began a fruitful association with the Bristol-based firm in the early 1920s and in 1925 took up a technical post within the company where one of his first commissions was the redesign of the successful EW model. First seen at the 1928 Motor Cycle Show at Olympia, the new EW featured wet-sump lubrication, flat-topped pistons, heavier valve gear, finned valve caps and primary chain adjustment be means of fore-and-aft engine movement. Sporting the fashionable 'saddle' tank that would soon become almost universal, the much-revised EW was re-designated 'B29' while the original version continued as the 'A29'.Offered for sale from the private collection of a noted Douglas authority, this B29 was restored in 1992. In recent used for vintage runs, it has been MoT'd for the past five years and will we are advised possess a fresh certificate by time of sale. Offered with Swansea V5 registration document
